Upper Clackamas Whitewater Festival - Clinics
River Awareness Groups
Several very important river access and awareness groups will be on hand to share their knowledge. The people who will be at the Upper Clackamas Whitewater Festival representing these groups are the leaders who are making an impact on our sport in a wide variety of ways. As much as you need to know what they are doing, they also need your input as active members of the whitewater community.
Please visit the web sites of these organizations. Make yourself aware of the issues they are fighting, the changes being made and the challenges they face. Make it a point to stop by and see these folks and let them know where you stand on the issues.
- Tom Martin, Colorado River advocate, co-founder of River Runners For
Wilderness and author of many of the books we use to run river will be

- Not only is this an excellent chance for you to meet and interact with these organizations, it's also a unique time when many of them have the chance to meet and compare notes. After the Festival we all come away better informed and empowered. The man who literally "wrote the book" - John
Garren will be at the UCWWF to meet boaters and discuss the hot topic of
river ownership, an important issue that affects our access to the rivers.
John, author of "Oregon River Tours" and many other whitewater
books, is a Director of National
Organization for Rivers (NORS) and brings a wealth of knowledge to
the table. Many of us, myself included, have run many a river using John's guides as our bible. Come up, meet John, and learn what is going on.

American Whitewater restores rivers dewatered by hydropower dams, eliminates water degradation, improves public land management and protects public access to rivers for responsible recreational use. AW's River Stewardship team represents paddlers' interests to restore rivers, eliminate water degradation, improve public land management and protect public access for responsible recreational use.
Once again we are proud to have AW's Tom O'Keefe and Stacy Johnson
attending the Festival. Tom has traveled across the country and around
the globe in search of great rivers and most recently completed a final
descent of the Yangtze River through the Three Gorges, before the gates
were closed on the world's largest dam. Tom has been a volunteer with
American Whitewater for more than a decade and a Regional Coordinator in
the Pacific Northwest for the past several years.
Stacy has been a member and active volunteer with AW for several years.
Stacy is also a very active member of our own Upper Clackamas Whitewater
Festival organization committee.
- The Sierra Club's members and supporters are more than 1.3 million of your friends and neighbors. Inspired by nature, we work together to protect our communities and the planet. The Club is America's oldest, largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization.
- Access to our rivers is under attack! The attacks come repeatedly in legislative bills. They also come when barbed wire is strung, and when travelers are harassed off sections of the river, or are wrongly arrested or prosecuted for trespass. They come in the media. They come at navigability studies, when outcry slows or stops the states review of the facts .Common Waters of Oregon is fighting these battles every day. Come out and meet these folks. Find out what you can do to help.
- Trout Unlimited will be at the Upper Clackamas Whitewater Festival. Trout Unlimited say's, "All of our actions on the land are ultimately reflected in the quality of fish and wildlife habitat. More than 50 million Americans hunt and fish. Too often, their voices and interests are lost in the din of controversy that has come to define public land management. The intent of TU's Public Lands Initiative is to cut through the noise".
Once again the role that this organization plays impacts us all as people who utilize the resources. Take a few minutes and make yourself aware of the situation and visit with Trout Unlimited reps at the Festival.
Stop by the Booths and talk to the Folks!
